Dr. Ian Smith
I have been a Senior Lecturer in Anaesthesia at Keele University and Consultant Anaesthetist at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent since 1995.
I became President of the British Association of Day Surgery in June 2010. prior to that I have served on the Council of the Association since 2000 and was Editor of the Journal of One-day Surgery from 2004 to 2009.
I remain an advisor to the Ambulatory Anaesthesia subcommittee of the European Society of Anaesthesiologists and was Chairman of the group from 1999–2004.
In the UK I was an NHS Modernisation Agency “Clinical Champion” for day surgery from 2003–2005 and was seconded as a clinical lead to the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement day surgery programme from 2008–10. I have been on several day and short-stay working parties for the Association of Anaesthetists, Royal College of Surgeons and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
My own Trust has a strong commitment to day surgery and I have considerable personal experience in a wide range of day surgery procedures, including the world’s first series of day case laparoscopic nephrectomies in adult patients.
